Weaverville First - Mountain Terrace
Our efforts to help the Mountain Terrace Mobile Home Park Residents:

For the past few months Weaverville First has been actively engaged in efforts to assist the residents of the Mountain Terrace Mobile Home Park that are being displaced as a result of the Northridge Commons project, including Lowe's and Wall-Mart. We will be posting updates here regarding this project.

Hi Everyone,

I hope your year is off to a wonderful start. I wanted to give you an update on our efforts to help the displaced home owners at Mountain Terrace.

Weaverville First is continuing to work with the Mountain Terrace project: Coming to the aid of approximately 40 mobile home owners that are being displaced by the 85 acre North Ridge Commons development that includes a Wal-Mart and Lowe's.  We've made many inroads into helping our neighbors, but there is much more to be done. Below is an outline of what has been established and what needs we still have. We have reached a critical point. Many of the residents are poised and ready to move - but the final details of how we can help them have not been nailed down. We have determined that our estimates were a little low. It looks closer to $3000 - to $3500. per family to realistically get them all moved. There are many reasons for this, probably most pointedly that because some of the homes have been situated for so long, some things will be required to be brought up to code - such as electrical on several homes, and new to code entrance porches.  If you can find an area that you can help, please contact us at info@weavervillefirst.org

1. Weaverville First has established a tax deductible fund through The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. Pledges have been made, some smaller contributions have been received, but we are still awaiting the funds from pledges.  See below to contribute:

a.) $1000. from PSNC Energy through Weaverville Town Council member Don Hallingse - received
b.) $1165. from individual contributors - received
d.) $46,000. from Harris Murr and Vermillion - pledged
e.) $10,000. from Lowe's Corp - pledged
f.) Contribution from Walmart - confirmed, but no amount disclosed

If you would like to contribute to this fund, tax-deductable donations may be made to the “Mountain Terrace Fund of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina,” and sent to:  P.O. Box 1888, Asheville, NC 28802.

2. Qualification for Funding:
For residents to qualify, Fund Guidelines have been established, and a packet distributed which requires proof of ownership of the home, estimates for moving costs, proof of identity, etc. A meeting tomorrow where the residents can meet  for 20 minutes, one on one with a member of Weaverville First for review of their application -- will take place at the Weaverville Library from 11- 2 pm.

3. Other fundraising:
We have crafted, and sent a letter to local churches to garner their support of this project. There are many ways in which churches and citizens can become involved.

a.) Adopt a Family: The Church could adopt one family and see that the needs of that particular family are met in order to get them moved and safely in a new location.

b.) Solicit members of their congregation that have skills needed to help families, such as building skills, electricians and plumbers, to see if they would be willing to donate labor.

c.) Solicit members of their congregation that have businesses that could donate materials.

d.) Last but not least, decide whether the church itself could make a monetary donation, and or take a collection specifically for the aid of these neighbors.

e.) Individuals neighbors such as yourself, could also contribute in similar ways as above.  In addition, Weaverville First has incurred administrative costs, such as a paid interpreter, copying documents, etc. If you would like to contribute to this part of our efforts, you can go to our home page and contribute through PAY PAL by clicking the donation icon on our home page. This contribution would not be tax deductible as Weaverville First is not an established 501-3(c)

f.) We have also identified other foundations that could be solicited for monetary donations and who's mission directs them to. We could use some help. If there is anyone that is familiar with this type of grant request, and could come forward to help - this would be invaluable. Our committee is stretched right now, and we could use volunteers to contact these agencies and organizations. Contact us at info@weavervillefirst.org to help.

And lastly, for neighbors wishing to volunteer or donate building materials, please contact Weaverville First at info@weavervillefirst.org

My best to all and a very big thank you to everyone that has contributed to this effort so far!
